Early Life
Mark Edward Fischbach was born on June 28, 1989, at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father Cliffton was a career army man and was in the army for 23 years before he retired and then passed away in 2008.
Mark’s mother Sunok is a woman of Korean ethnicity whom Mark’s father had met while stationed abroad. As a kid growing up in Honolulu, Mark dreamt of becoming a video game developer but his family forced him to think more practically.
Some of his earliest gaming memories involved the family computer and a Super Nintendo system that his older brother Jason got for Christmas. Mark stated that he used the games as bonding time with his older brother and also as an escape from his dysfunctional home life.
His mother was constantly unhappy and eventually, his parents got divorced. Mark had to relocate schools and move into a smaller place with his father and his brother. He had to readjust to make new friends relied on his brother’s friendship and joined the school band.
Career Beginnings
After the birth of Mark, his dad retired from the army and took up the job working for a book company and they relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio. While attending the Milford High School Mark developed an interest in playing trumpet in the marching crew.
Upon his graduation, Mark went on to obtain a degree in biomedical engineering at the University of Cincinnati but he dropped out of college to pursue his career as a YouTuber. At that time, his father was diagnosed with cancer and Mark decided that he would have to put his dream of gaming on hold.
Mark enrolled in a Civil engineering course and later switched to a medical engineering course. While on a summer holiday from college, Mark woke up to his stepmother screaming. When got downstairs he witnessed his father passing away and held his hands as he said “I love you so much“.
Health Issues
Mark continued in college with his engineering degree and got a job in his field. Markiplier claimed that the job made him miserable and he worked for 8 hours and probably did about 2 hours of actual work. After a while, the loss of his father and all his life frustrations caught up with him.
He woke up one morning with an excruciating pain in his side and had to be rushed to the hospital. Mark’s appendix was removed and the doctors found a tumor that had to be removed at a later date.
While in the hospital Markipiler decided what he wanted to do in life. He used his tax refund to buy a camera for sketch comedy but ended up making “Let’s Play Commentaries” first. Besides a name he used Make and Multiplier together to combine the word “Markiplier“.

He launched his YouTube channel in March 2012 and began uploading videos on it. He started off playing games like “Amnesia: The Dark Descent” as his first YouTube series. At the beginning of his career, YouTube restricted his AdSense account after he played various games on his channel.
In May 2012, he created his second channel, “markiplierGAME” and began uploading content. As his popularity grew Markiplier started adding more content to his channel such as “Minecraft”. After creating a large amount of content, his channel ballooned into what it is today.
