A Change of Course: How Personal Loss Led One London Entrepreneur to Redefine Memorial Care

Careers often follow a predictable arc—education, ambition, progression. For Cameron Guest, that arc shifted abruptly, reshaped by family responsibility and a decision that would permanently alter his understanding of purpose.

While studying and playing football at McMaster University, Cameron’s focus was firmly on athletics. As a running back, his days were structured around training, performance, and long-term goals tied to the sport. But in 2021, his father’s diagnosis with multiple forms of cancer changed everything.

“There comes a moment where you realize some priorities can’t be postponed,” Cameron explains. “Football mattered, but my family mattered more.”

Learning a Trade Under Unthinkable Circumstances

Cameron’s father was the owner of C&L Cemetery Lettering Inc., a business built on specialized monument engraving and restoration work throughout Southwestern Ontario. Using a mobile setup, he spent years traveling cemetery to cemetery, restoring inscriptions and preserving family memorials with care and precision.

As his father’s health declined, Cameron stepped away from football and into the trade. With little time to ease into the role, he learned directly on the job—engraving lettering, restoring weathered monuments, and working in spaces where professionalism and sensitivity were equally critical.

“There was a lot of trust involved,” Cameron says. “My dad knew I was stepping in because I wanted to protect what he built—not just the business, but the reputation behind it.”

That year became both a crash course in craftsmanship and a deeply personal chapter of transition.

From Mobile Service to Full-Service Memorial Shop

After his father’s passing, Cameron and his mother faced an important decision: continue operating the mobile lettering business as it was, or expand the vision.

In October 2023, they chose growth—opening Forest City Memorials, a monument making company and showroom in London. The move represented a significant shift, requiring new equipment, supplier relationships, and a physical space designed to welcome families during difficult moments.

“We weren’t just continuing something—we were building something new,” Cameron explains. “It was challenging, but it allowed us to serve families in a more complete way.”

Putting People Before Process

One of Cameron’s central goals was to change how families experience the memorial process. He observed that many people felt rushed or unsure, often unaware that they could work directly with monument makers rather than navigating everything through cemetery offices.

“Grief already makes decisions harder,” he says. “The last thing families need is confusion or pressure.”

At Forest City Memorials, consultations are intentionally unhurried. Families are encouraged to ask questions, share stories, and take time to reflect before making decisions. The focus is on collaboration rather than transaction.

“There’s something meaningful about sitting with people, listening, and letting the memorial take shape naturally,” Cameron adds. “It often becomes part of the healing process.”

Local Craftsmanship in a Globalized Industry

In an industry where outsourcing is common, Cameron takes pride in producing monuments locally. His team designs and engraves monuments on-site, allowing for greater customization and quality control.

Each memorial is treated as a unique piece—tailored to reflect the individual being remembered through thoughtful design, inscription, and layout choices.

“Our aim is to restore dignity and beauty to these spaces,” Cameron says. “Cemeteries should feel personal, not standardized.”

That philosophy has resonated with families across London, many of whom refer others after their experience. The business has grown steadily through word of mouth rather than traditional advertising.

A Legacy That Continues Through the Work

For Cameron, the work carries a deeper meaning beyond entrepreneurship. Every project serves as a quiet continuation of his father’s life’s work.

“What my dad built didn’t end when he passed,” Cameron reflects. “It changed form. I see his legacy in every monument we complete and every family we help.”

Cameron’s journey is not a story of abandoning ambition, but of redefining it. By choosing family, responsibility, and service, he transformed personal loss into a vocation rooted in empathy and craftsmanship—proving that sometimes the most enduring legacies are shaped not by plans, but by how we respond when those plans change.
