Early Life

Shawn Maurice Mims was born on March 22, 1981, in New York City, New York, the United States. He was raised in Washington Heights, Manhattan in a Jamaican-American household. His mom sent him to a school so he could keep himself out of trouble.

When Mims was 13 years old, both of his parents passed away. After that, he started focusing on music to overcome his depression. Mims attended Westbury High School and after that, he took his passion for music more seriously.

Career Beginnings

In 2000 the rapper Mims released his first single “L.O.V.E/I Made a Vow” and was featured on Baby Blue Soundcrew’s compilation “Private Party Collectors Edition Vol. 2” in 2001.

From there, he continued to work as a featured artist on songs like Love “Em All” which earned him a reputation in Canada. In 2002 and 2003 he released two tracks Big-Man Lil-Man/P.I.M.P. and I Did You Wrong respectively.

Breakthrough

The turning point of Mims’ career arrived in 2006 when he released the hit single titled “This Is Why I’m Hot“. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts and soon became a club favorite and radio staple.

It was also certified two times Platinum for selling over 2 million units. Even the ringtone version of the track was a success going five times Platinum in the US for selling 200 thousand copies. Additionally, that song landed him to sign a deal with EMI and Capitol Records.

Following this, his debut album “Music Is My Savior” came out in March 2007. It showed off his significant connection to music. The album and the hit song played a crucial role, catapulting Mims to fame. Mims earned a net worth of 4 million US dollars.

Further Success

His second album “Guilt” was released in April 2009 and like the first album, it went through various themes and showed off Mims’ versatility as an artist. However, unlike the immediate acclaim for his first album, fan and critical reception was much more mixed.

His second album contains hit singles like “Move (If You Wanna)” and “Love Rollercoaster” ft LeToya Luckett. Both of these tracks went viral and earned him a lot of success, even though his albums weren’t a big success.

Later, he released two mixtapes between 2009 and 2012, neither of which charted. He also appeared on several remixes of high-profile artists like Snoop Dogg, Kylie Minogue, and Jason Derulo. However, this still wasn’t enough to bring him back into the spotlight.

Fued with Capitol

Around 2007, Mims’ relationship with his label became strained. The core of this conflict was Capitol Records came from financial disagreements and the label’s alleged mismanagement. Originally, Mims had entered a joint venture with Capitol Records.

He expected a fair split of profit after expenses, however, Mims later accused the label of inflating expenses and withholding earnings. This eventually led to a prolonged legal battle. Mims sought millions in unpaid earnings from the Capitol. The lawsuit revolved around his earnings from 2007 to 2008.

Essentially, it was all the revenue he got from “This Is Why I’m Hot“, his experiences with his label significantly slowed down his career’s momentum. He argued that Capitol Records failed to support his second album “Guilt” properly.

Other Ventures

In 2016, Mims launched his app “RecordGram” in collaboration with businessman Erik Mendelson. The new app was more comprehensive and its impact on the music industry became clear.

Though Mims is no longer a chart-topping artist, he has instead become a creative force who has successfully bridged the aperture between music and technology.

To many people, his journey from Washington Heights to the forefront of tech entrepreneurship is an example of his sheer adaptability, creativity, and enduring influence.
